See Something? Cite Something.

WHAM. That’s gotta be the biggest damn comic-chart there ever was, right?

UPDATE: HELP IRONY HAPPEN! Here’s today’s comic on Reddit. Here it is on BoingBoing. Post it in places and let me know where or post in the comments!

Thank you oh-so much to this joint endeavor of The System and Caldwell of Loldwell.com. Both of us have had plenty of experience with our work making its way across the internet, both with and without attribution to our hard work, and so we thought we would make a comic/chart about how to do it right.

Consider this reference material for the next time you find an artist’s work on a website without attribution to all the hard work someone put in. Next time you see someone posting something that isn’t theirs on Tumblr or Flickr or DeviantArt or wherever else, let them know what you really think. That they are killing the internet. And of course, every time you do that, the Internet (which, let’s face it, is a kitten) sheds a single tear. And then dies because IT HAS BEEN KILLED BY STUPID PEOPLE.

What’s that? You want this on a t-shirt? A poster? Not a problem!

Oh, you thought it would make a good shirt? Which part? The Googles? The sharing emblem? The sad kitten? Gotcha covered. Click on the images below to take you to the HilariAwesome.com store, where you can purchase any of the three shirts we’ve created from this comic. Proceeds go to the original artists, who worked hard to make you laugh and provide this public service announcement.

UPDATE: For those of you who were here earlier, there used to be a “sharing is awesome!” shirt based largely on the image in the above chart available right where this paragraph now lives. Due to using, oh, everyone’s logo in it, this infringed on some copyrights. If you think about it, that goes completely against the point of the chart in the first place, so we’ve taken it down for the time being. Caldwell and I fully plan to retool the design to not feature so many other people’s work in a way that goes against the spirit of the chart and then repost it as available for sale. In the meantime, hope you like the other shirts!

(NOTE: If you would like a “radio edit” of the chart for whatever reason, just place the order and put that in the “special instructions” and we’ll make it happen!)

Of course, talk it up in the comments! We hid a ton of little jokes into this chart, see if you can find them all and list your favorite!

So – close – But this flowchart totally misses the fact that unless you get permission, "sharing" the item is theft, piracy, copyright infringement, douchey. The Copyright Clearance Centre made some great cartoon videos to help you understand how to share, legally. Fun, as well as informative. http://bit.ly/bfkjGf (Note that I'm providing the link and credit, but NOT embedding the video. – That would be theft, since I didn't get permission.)

I just replaced your text links to your site with text links to mine and spammed this on G+ and Facebook.

Once I actually had to hunt down an unattributed image on Google. Not the best experience, but worth it.

"(Note that I'm providing the link and credit, but NOT embedding the video. – That would be theft, since I didn't get permission.) "
And note that nobody clicks on provided links, because we're all sick of being tricked by links into going to some lame virus-filled site, so your point is totally mute. Also, a lot of sites don't like linking back to theirs because it can blow their bandwidth, and people mostly DON'T follow "hey look at this" links, so how to show the world how clever the creator is? I think it's your approach that misses the point!

I agree 100% that permission SHOULD be sought, because that's polite. But I don't agree that merely displaying content on another site is stealing it. If the content's original creator is credited, and a link to the creator is provided, then it's a compliment that has been paid to the creator by the person you call a thief.

Copyright theft is not a matter of opinion. It's law. An international agreement.

If you are not able to read a book on copyright law, you might try one of these really easy-to-understand primers outlined by Jonathan Bailey in this post: http://www.blogherald.com/2011/08/05/5-legal-guid…

This one is the easiest to understand: http://outspokenmedia.com/blogging/blogging-laws/

Linking is like recommending. And it is flattering. Reposting content is like burning a copy of a DVD to hand out. It's theft. Getting permission is not only polite, it's the law.

This is gospel! I love it.

I have a tumblr, and I don't link credit because it's not always so easy to find where credit is due (I mean, typing "artsy picture of two blurred people" or "cute brown lop rabbit" just doesn't get me much to work on.) I never claim that the images are my own, however.

Thank you sharing these kind of wonderful discussions. In addition, the right travel and medical insurance system can often eradicate those considerations that come with vacationing abroad. Your medical emergency can in the near future become expensive and that’s bound to quickly place a financial burden on the family’s finances. Putting in place the perfect travel insurance package prior to setting off is well worth the time and effort. Thanks a lot

      Cool!

Please note that this does not and will never work with Japanese fanart. The artists will see you as a vile human being if you repost their work, EVEN IF you give credit. Just don't do it.
