The System 529: Days Off

I feel this way all the time. I call it “giving a shit”. Also, this is a pseudo-followup to this comic from Memorial Day a few years ago.

Meanwhile, the other day I made a quick poster and posted an image of it online. People wanted me to make it for sale, so I did! You can now buy it from the HilariAwesome.com store here. Or you can click the image below. If you’re not familiar with the source material, first read this and then watch this (that second one NSFW).

Buy this…

If you haven’t been to or seen a Super Art Fight yet, you’ll probably need to see what’s going on. For that, I provide this reference video from our last show:

Enticed? Good. Now you’ll care about the fact that we have our NEXT BIG SHOW THIS FRIDAY! In Baltimore! All the details are on this flyer. Click on it or here for the rest, plus info on where to buy tickets (I think it might sell out):

Finally, if you want to learn more about SAF, I did an interview with Brightest Young Things about Super Art Fight and beyond. For a little behind the scenes, you should check it out. Of course, the best is the intro:

Ross Nover is a busy, nerdy man.

So true, so true. You should read the rest here.

A System in the Wild, found by Systemic James, here’s a link to 22 cool posters. Well I’d say about 12 of them are cool, 4 thought-provoking, and the rest not so bad to look at (NOTE: not real numbers). LINK »

Thanks to Systemic and long-time friend of The System Marty Fn Day for sending me this amazing poster. Well he sent me a link to the poster. If he actually sent me the POSTER that would be way cooler. Hear that, Marty? Huh?

It’s a painstakingly detailed image of almost 1,000 different zombie references from movies, books and games all in one great poster. The site even lets you zoom in and pan around to see all the references! Definitely worth checking out. Seems like they may start making more of the same, be sure to stay tuned to FreakingAweso.me.

It’s been entirely too long since I posted cool typography links here on the site, so here are two.

The Big Caption is a companion site to The Big Picture. They take whatever the latest “Big Picture” photos are, and add great (and often hilarious) captions to the image. There are some running themes throughout it’s so far short run, such as “Haters Gonna Hate” and “Hipsters Start Your Photocopiers”. All in all a great site that’s fun to look at. My favorite though is probably the most famous so far, “Fuck you, flowers”. Did I post that one before? I can’t remember. Well it’s awesome. LINK »

Music Philosophy is a link I found via my favorite music site, Aurgasm. They take music lyric quotes and make awesome poster-style images out of them. Here’s a clip from one about The Beatles from “We Can Work It Out”. Could you tell? Check out their site, it’s colorful and fun. LINK »

Finally, one piece of business before I wrap up this post. Does anyone actually read these posts? Click on the links? Enjoy what I’m posting? The blog segment has fallen by the wayside lately, and while I do it for my own enjoyment I’m curious if people enjoy it, miss it when it’s not here, etc. Even if you aren’t a frequent commenter on the site, drop me a line via a comment or however else you feel like and let me know if you read these posts. Or conversely, post and let me know if you don’t, though in a bit of a Catch-22 if you don’t you probably won’t read this to see that.

Two quick awesome typography links!

First from Systemic AmyC, who sends a link to a set of moustache brackets in a ton of different fonts. Above you see one row of many, but I had to show the Hoefler. It was just to classy.  Check it out and let me know which one is your favorite! LINK »

This one from Systemic Greg is a great ampersand eye chart. Check out all the other photos of the real poster (which you can order), it has some beautiful printing / pressing going on.  LINK »

The System 345: WWJMBD

I don’t expect most of you will get this, but that makes for a wonderful teaching opportunity. Josef Müller-Brockmann was a member of the Swiss design movement. Like Massimo Vignelli (whom I almost made this comic about until I realized he, like parts of the De Stijl movement, weren’t so into the tipped composition thing) he was into simple geometry, grid formation, and fonts like Aksidenz Grotesk and Helvetica.

Anyway, there are worse posters you could put on your wall.

Shepard Fairey (the guy that made the now famous Obama HOPE poster) was very quickly accused of stealing by the person who took the original photo on which the image is based. Now, he says that the argument over which photo it is based on has shifted to his admittance of lying on the issue.  The point is, this whole issue has been going on since the election and is still going.  This joint is getting real. LINK.

Are you a designer? Ever use a photo for reference?   Think Shepard was wrong to use the photo like this?  Think it’s only an issue because his poster got so popular (I know I do)? Your thoughts! I want them!
