The System 552: Antisocial Networking

Something about this post description was messing with the RSS feed, so I had to delete it. It wasn’t that clever anyway.

The System 550: Orders of Magnitude

Happy holidays, all! And sorry for the lack of consistent updates, but the new System website work is in full swing, and I’ve prioritized it ahead of comics lately. It’ll be back on track soon I hope, as we’re entering the time of year where I actually have some time.

Meantime, go spend time with your family! And by “family” I mean “video games”.

The System 539: The Nerd / Geek Debate, Settled

nerd noun
/nərd/
2. A term used by the self-described to imply extremely awesome knowledge or obsession over a particular topic.
3. A term to put in your dating profile to attract the geekiest nerds.
(SEE ALSO: geek, only swap wherever it says ‘geek’ for ‘nerd’ and vice versa, that’s kinda the joke here)

I listen to a lot of The Nerdist Podcast, and have heard the debate rage on between what exactly is a “geek” versus what exactly is a “nerd”. Even sites like ThinkGeek, BoardGameGeek, and The Nerdist pretty much give you an idea about where some people stand. Hence this. Let’s unite under the umbrella of one word, used for good. Not evil. The nerd/geek. We can geek/nerd out about it all day and all night, or we can move on and use that time better talking about how cool Doctor Who is or something. And he is. Oh, he is.

DISCUSS: How do you define “nerd” and “geek”? No dictionary definitions, Systemics. Keep it to your own interpretations.

The System 525: Software Terms

What was the last program you DERPGRADED? I generally wait until things get stable before upgrading for this very reason, but I know some people have been complaining about Mac OSX Lion, every Adobe Creative Suite upgrade, and a whole lot about the new Final Cut.

Also, as mentioned, my computer is in the shop (I’m borrowing a friend’s). If anyone feels like chipping in a few bucks for all the free comics on the site, it’s much appreciated! I wrote a post if you want more info here, or you can use the button below.

The System 499: The Zombie Apocalypse and You

I was walking around London, seeing all the bicycle commuters go by (way to go, UK cyclists!) when this thought occurred to me. Bikes would be really handy for the zombie apocalypse. In movies you always see people with cars that run out of gas or won’t start, or on foot. Bicycles would be a great compromise! You could dodge around all those cars that get left in the road, the trash cans and boxes that wind up in every scene. You’d be quiet (as long as you avoided the bike bell) and with relatively little maintenance. Sure, there’s the thought of the occasional flat or your chain coming loose, but then you wouldn’t be that worse off than being on foot. The bike could even make for a makeshift weapon to give you some distance from a few brain-guzzlers that won’t leave you alone. If not, the U-lock definitely could crack some heads.

Which led me to my next thought: bike messengers would survive the zombie apocalypse. They’re fast, well organized and let’s face it, look like they’ve already survived the apocalypse. I’d love to see a movie about a few bike messengers working to make their way out of the city, all talking on their walkie talkies and using poster tubes to knock some heads. The ones on fixed gear bikes would be the first to go, zombies walk up hills and don’t care if you can “hover” at a red light.

Oh, and I must say! I did a quick bit of research, and I’m not the only one to think of this idea:

The System 484: Carscade

The CARSCADE, also known as the Karssler Effect, has been known to plague most urban and suburban areas, especially around rush hour. The Karssler Effect is (of course) a reference to the Kessler effect, also known as the ablative cascade. If you don’t know what that is, look it up. It’ll scare the bejeez out of you.

Danger: Trap 3 Days to Go

This shirt is still in PREORDER SALE through Wednesday, April 20th. That means it’s only $15 instead of $20, all for a little extra wait time. Also, you help support me and gauge how many shirts I should order. So order now here »

The System 459: Cycling Terms

Another “terms” comic. I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I love working on them. They always turn out well I think. Today’s comic is actually based on a true story of biking to work last week, where a guy zoomed by me, leaving only inches to spare, only to get pulled over a quarter mile later. Serves him right in my mind, as I wasn’t doing anything wrong. Makes you wish everyone just wasn’t in such a hurry all the time. Has this kind of thing ever happened to you?

To those that have stuck around since “chart-okalypse”, thanks! Hope you like what you’re seeing around here. As a recap on the chart, we’re working on a “PG” version of the chart as well as some more items that feature some of the artwork, including Professor Internet. Stay tuned to the site for more.

Another comic on Wednesday. To those in the US, hope you’re enjoying MLK day. To those outside, hope Monday isn’t sucking too hard.
