I agree w/SKleefeld: "if your dog is overweight, then you need more exercise." However, if you are doing a great deal of working out then maybe it's a matter of sharing the fitness regime. After all, if getting in shape makes you feel better, who is to say your pet wouldn't feel the same way?

While you are at the gym or out walking, jogging or cycling, what is your pet doing? Is he/she home just sitting around watching tv or listening to the radio? Well, then, why would you be surprised if you suddenly discover your pet has gotten obese?

I did find this information (of course I would go searching for something:

"Have your dog get used to exercising or just by walking around the block regularly. If he looks like bored with the routine, teach him some dog games. There are times that when they are under physiological and psychological troubles, they gain weight. Dogs that are too fat could take in air much harder than regular-weighted ones. The fitness of the dog is our concern. It is preferable that you do the lesser difficult exercises then moving to more active sessions. If you still feel a little hesitancy to put him into exercise due to lack of knowledge in proper employment of such activity, you are welcome to ask his doctor and get suggestion."

So, it's time for a little guilt, if your pet is fat, then chances are it's your fault!
