The System 502: The New Holidays

10,000th Tweet Day

Celebrated by: Reminiscing about tweets past. Singing songs like “Auld Slang Syne” and drinking. Silly hats are a must.

Traditional gifts: A new charger/battery for your Twitter-choosing device of choice. Cards should be no more than 140 characters. Sending photos of gifts and well-wishes via TwitPic and yFrog.

AIM Screen Name’s Bar / Bat Mitzvah

Celebrated by: Attending the event where your little boy screen name becomes a man (screen name). Witness as DrkwngDck1245 comes of age as he chats those on his buddy list with the chosen reading from the Torah, or more likely a link to a funny video that’s secretly a way to send your friend a picture of something they didn’t want to see.

Traditional gifts: Skype credits in multiples of 18, or a really nice Wacom pen.

Computer Warranty Expiration Day

Celebrated by: Wearing black, and looking back on the good times. The minute your warranty expires, your computer will start showing signs of age. The only real good news is the older your computer gets, the sooner you get to a new one.

Traditional gifts: A new computer.*

WMATA (Washington Metro Area Transit Authority) needs some updates and additions to the iconic map it’s been using for the last 30 years, and to make the changes they brought in the original designer, Lance Wyman. It’s nice to see them going back to the person who created it, and not some new designer looking to make his mark and alter things.

The article is a good one, goes into some of Lance’s work, the difficulties of the redesign process, and some history behind the original map. Did you know Lance wanted to make cool little icon illustrations for every station? All that and more in the article, as well as a nice photo gallery.

The System 500: Looking Back

Ah, 500! As usual with the hundred-posts, here is a comic with recaps from the last hundred comics. If you like this one, check out the other recap-comics from 400, 300, 200 and 100. Of course, to fully appreciate it, you may want to go back and read the last 100 comics, and see if you can name where all the panels are from. CAN YOU?

So there we are! 500 comics. Wow. I don’t even know where to start. Back in July 2008 when I started, I don’t know if I really thought I could make it this far. Mostly right now I’m thinking back to where things were a year ago, and all the successes that have happened. Some big comics, like the “See Something Cite Something” chart, “Types of Typos”, “Bowser Testing” and “Road Sage”. Some big events, like speaking at SXSW, the huge growth and success of Super Art Fight, changing jobs, and growing the HilariAwesome.com store. Makes me wonder what will happen in the future…

If you want some big news, here it is! The first The System book is FINALLY getting done! I’m working on the best way to post the preorder, but it will finally be coming out. It’ll be about $20, so start saving and get ready! I wanted to get the preorder up today, but it makes sense to just wait and do it right. Stay tuned.

Thank you all so, so much for reading, sharing, commenting and doing everything you do that turns this website into a community. It is all appreciated and keeps me posting. I wish I could say 500 meant big changes, but really I’m proud to say that you can expect more of the same, only better.

So share your favorite comics from the last 100 in the comments, and see you Wednesday!

–Rosscott
