sxsw-2010I’ll be down at SXSW Interactive Festival starting Thursday in Austin, TX. Expect many a-tweet from the ol’ Rosscott account while I’m there. I tried to get on some panels and the like, but it looks like I’ll just be chillin’ with my friends and attending panels, seeing what I can see.

How about you? Any Systemics in the Austin, TX area? Whether you’ll be at the festival or not, let me know if you’re around. Drop a line on Twitter or in the comments.

Greetings again, Systemics, to another edition of System in the Wild! You send in System-style images spotted wherever to me through Twitter (@rosscott / @systemcomic) or email (systemcomic at gmail) and I post them here on the site!

First up (above) comes from Systemic Larom. We were debating whether this is a “no fellatio” sign or a more general “stay away from my crotch” sign. I vote for the latter. Somehow I made a connection to the world’s oddest game of ‘telephone’… LINK.

This next one I must unfortunately say goes unnamed, as I forgot to write down who sent it in. It was through Twitter, I remember that much. Beyond that I have no idea. Whomever it was, be sure to click the link to see WHY THE GUY IS ON FIRE. Worth it, trust me. Any IT guys out there? You’ll love this. LINK.

Finally, this last one is from ME. This comes from the A Day in the Life Conference to be held in Baltimore, MD at MICA. I’ve been asked to speak along side such people as Ellen Lupton and Other People I Don’t Know. I’ll be speaking more about my day job as a web designer than the comic things, but it’s all on the table. If you’re in the Baltimore area and like design geeking out, come join in. The magic day is April 24th. LINK.

As always, if you have things to send in that match in style to The System or are just awesome, send them over to systemcomic at gmail, or any of that other stuff I mentioned above. Until next time, Systemics!

I went to Katsucon last year, (spoke on a few panels and everything) and I’m going again this year. Of course, it will be a little more interesting considering we are all still recovering from the SNOWMAGEDDON that has plagued DC for the last 2 weeks. I for one will have to be a little understocked, but I will be there and in high spirits!  One thing is for certain:

If you are attending Katsucon, you should be sure to check out the Super Art Fight event we are holding Saturday afternoon at 2pm in Exhibit Hall A. Last year’s was the most amazing show to date, and we are looking to make this year even moreso.

So yes. Come to Katsucon.  Come by my table.  I’ll have shirts, prints, pins, and am up for just sitting around and answering questions, chatting, etc.  I really go to these to hang out more than make big bucks, so have no shame about coming by just to say hi.  The secret password is “I kern for keeps”. Obsidian drew me into his comic!  I’m the one in the green shirt.  Also included in the photo are Marty, Kev and Blondie, Dern and Kendra, Lar and Spike.  I hear there may be others.  Can you spot them?  Post in the comments!  LINK.

A Little Backstory of Why I Love Being a Webcomic Artist

This summer I attended Connecticon and got a chance to hang with Colombia’s own premiere webcomic artist Obsidian.  I have been listening to him on Extra Life Radio and reading his comic for years, and since we were doing a Super Art Fight as part of the convention, the chance to meet him and include him in the show was like wish fulfillment.

The amazing part about it all is that he didn’t really know anybody (that wasn’t amazing for him, mind you).  As such, I met him at the very beginning of the con and got to hang with him and his cohort Lord Ebo pretty much the whole time.  I showed him around what the con was like and he quickly fell into the group of webcomic friends that I’ve been lucky enough to form over the last couple of years of convention touring. The great thing about a group like this is all you need to do to join is have a website and be a nice dude (or fem-dude) and you’re pretty much in like Flynn.  Next thing you know you have another person to talk to online, another person linking to your site, and every once in a while someone does something cool like draws you into their stuff.

So thanks, O! You rock.  I hope you come back to Connecticon or some other convention I get to do, and the Super Art Fight stage always has a place for you.

NOTE: This is just the first line, not the whole comic.  Click the link to see the rest.

This past Friday I did a guest comic over at Dueling Analogs by the great Steve Napierski in honor of yet another year of his throwing his life away doing webcomics. He lists me as one of the first webtoonists he ever met, which I find interesting since I doubted he even knew who I was at the time.  Anyway, having gotten to know Steve over the last few years, I can honestly say that as far as gaming comics go, he tries harder than most.  LINK.

There’s a blog called Emdashes“[F]ounded in 2004 by Emily Gordon, is a place where keen and dedicated readers of The New Yorker, past and present, can find related news and commentary: about people, subjects, and ideas within the magazine, and events and conversations outside its pages.” They were kind enough to give The System a shout-out over on the site last week. A quick excerpt:

Emily and I have been tickled, at different times and at different locations, by a graphic design-themed comic strip called Rosscott, Inc.

So here’s a thanks to Emily and Pollux, who I am officially declaring Official Systemics.  Thanks!  If you get a chance, go say hey and tell them Rosscott sent ya. LINK.

The site Luprand’s Webcomic Musings recently reviewed The System (THE REVIEW CLICK HERE). While not the most favorable review in the world, they clearly are a fan enough to write a review and link a whole bunch of their favorite / least favorite comics.  The summary?

Four rounded panels and a load of snark.

Can’t disagree with that.  He also reviews some of my friends (Crooked Gremlins, Amu’s World, Paradigm Shift) and seems to have a thing against poop jokes.  To each his own I suppose.

In the past when people have reviewed The System, you Systemics have jumped to my defense and gone short of going after the reviewer.  I appreciate the love Systemics, but there’s no need. Feel free to discuss with him on his site or here the points he makes, but keep it classy.  Systemics are a classy bunch.

Sometimes I think I’m last to the party.  But sometimes that means I get to link to everyone else’s parties! Angry Zen Master, BaltiNerd, Bree “Sex Drugs and June Cleaver” Rubin and Super Art Fight have already posted, we Super Art Fighters had a show last night.

We had the opportunity—nay, PRIVELAGE to have a show with last night at the Metro Gallery with The Protomen, an ensemble rock opera about Mega Man.  We did a live mural during the show via uStream that had Super Art Fighters and friends Slaski, Impink and Lar in attendance that was pretty great.  It’s one of those great things that makes you look down at the life you’re living and make you realize you must be doing something right.  Thanks to all.

Now, we’re gearing up for this weekend! Along with Nick and Marty, Angry Zen Master, Mike Bracco, Bree, Impink, Dern and Joe “Digital Pimp” Dunn we will be tabling and having multiple shows at GameX in Philly!  All the details for Super Art Fight can be found here, but here’s the quick show schedule:

SATURDAY
9:30AM – 10:10AM :: Super Art Fight
11:10AM – 11:50AM :: Super Art Fight

SUNDAY
10:00AM – 10:40AM :: Super Art Fight
11:40AM – 12:20PM :: Super Art Fight

If you’re coming to the show, don’t expect any The System merch.  It’s all online on HilariAwesome.com, but I’m not bringing it to the show.  This weekend is about Super Art Fight only, which means boards, shirts and sketch cards will be for sale.  Still, come on by and see some great shows, play some video games, and otherwise have fun!

Oh, and for more pics of last night’s show, check out the SuperArtFight TwitPics or Baltinerd’s Picasa collection.

Bryan and Dern from Hello with Cheese were kind enough to work me into their latest comic on Where the Wild Things Are (along with many of my webcomic friends).  That’s me all the way on the right, trying to push my way into the panel.  Why am I all the way out there?  Take it up with Bryan on their site.  CHECK IT.

Three pieces of good news, Systemics!

1.  Ben of Three Panel Opera has interviewed me for a series called “Questions for Artists Who Are Awesome”. Since I embody both artist-ness and awesomeness, it makes for a good read. Go read it now, and while you’re at it read his comic. It’s about kids and their odd imaginary friends that won’t go away.

2.  Go binge our archive. Have you ever felt that seeing almost 300 comics in the archive is just too much to deal with? Have you ever wished there was a better way to dig through that huge archive? Well the wonderful folk at Archive Binge have made it possible to set up a custom RSS feed that lets you start at the beginning, set a pace, and read the entire archive of some of your favorite webcomics. There are some huge* comics like Goats, XKCD, Wondermark, and of course myself. So click on over and sign up.

*Huge in your hearts, not in readership.

3. There is now a Comic Archive page to this here website. Click on over and see all the comics you want, now easily navigatable in some sort of chronological-type order.
