When one person sends me something, I strongly consider posting it. When 5 people do, I give in already. Thanks to all of you Systemics who sent it my way, it is a good read.

Written from the perspective of one of the most reviled typefaces, McSweeny has put together a manifesto of sorts from Comic Sans.

Listen up. I know the shit you’ve been saying behind my back. You think I’m stupid. You think I’m immature. You think I’m a malformed, pathetic excuse for a font. Well think again, nerdhole, because I’m Comic Sans, and I’m the best thing to happen to typography since Johannes fucking Gutenberg.

Very much worth a read. LINK »

It’s been entirely too long since I posted cool typography links here on the site, so here are two.

The Big Caption is a companion site to The Big Picture. They take whatever the latest “Big Picture” photos are, and add great (and often hilarious) captions to the image. There are some running themes throughout it’s so far short run, such as “Haters Gonna Hate” and “Hipsters Start Your Photocopiers”. All in all a great site that’s fun to look at. My favorite though is probably the most famous so far, “Fuck you, flowers”. Did I post that one before? I can’t remember. Well it’s awesome. LINK »

Music Philosophy is a link I found via my favorite music site, Aurgasm. They take music lyric quotes and make awesome poster-style images out of them. Here’s a clip from one about The Beatles from “We Can Work It Out”. Could you tell? Check out their site, it’s colorful and fun. LINK »

Finally, one piece of business before I wrap up this post. Does anyone actually read these posts? Click on the links? Enjoy what I’m posting? The blog segment has fallen by the wayside lately, and while I do it for my own enjoyment I’m curious if people enjoy it, miss it when it’s not here, etc. Even if you aren’t a frequent commenter on the site, drop me a line via a comment or however else you feel like and let me know if you read these posts. Or conversely, post and let me know if you don’t, though in a bit of a Catch-22 if you don’t you probably won’t read this to see that.

If you ever have trouble picking a typeface, check out this handy flow chart that leads you through the process. It’s not just handy, it’s also really funny. “Everybody loves Garamond” and the like.

Also one on the trustworthiness of beards. Thanks to all the people who sent this in!

The System 352: Popular Internet Comics

Also learned from experience: self-referential comics never work.

Remember, the CUPCAKE SANDWICH contest is running this week. 2 entries so far, so your chances to win are pretty high! All you have to do is enter.

A lot of you guys are nice enough to send me links to things. They’re generally pretty awesome but tend to build up in my inbox or sitting in a tab to remind me on my browser. Here’s a few of them:

A bad font pun thanks to Systemic Krystyna. LINK »

Systemic Nick sends in a link to a recent episode of The Daily Show. Around minute 4 watch out for a drawing that looks eerily similar to Jimmy the MurderdogLINK »

Systemic Cledwyn sends word of a typeface that is dynamically generated based on a photo of your face. Sadly not available for download, but the videos seem awesome. LINK »

That’s all for now. See you guys soon! Feel free to send more cool stuff my way, I may just post it.

The System 348: Fitting In At SXSW (Gear)

Yes, I know most of you are sick of hearing about it, but here is some insight into the SXSW Interactive Experience. I’ll post more of an update here soon, but for now this is about what I’m seeing. Of course, this is what I’m doing right now as well so who am I to talk.

UPDATE: I wound up on TWiT live for about 30 seconds during the DiggNation party the other night. I went up to Leo Laporte to thank him for linking to the Singletasking comic. Of course, I was in the middle of trying to get some friends into the party, but wanted to say a quick hello. This is when he turned the camera on me for a quick interview. I was off my game, and therefore only mentioned the web address twice. It was a live feed, but some amazing Systemics managed to swoop in and got some screen shots. PICS THAT IT HAPPENED. If anyone can find a video feed of this freakish occurance, please do let me know.

Digital goods for the design community since the space-time paradox of 1887 says their tagline. Currently available on the site is a set of custom ampersands (available in EPS and OpenType formats) for just $10.00, but what really gets me going is how much fun the site is. The ampersands have titles like “Swooshium”, “Piercium” and “Elegantium”. The whole thing is set up like a periodic table of elements. LINK.

The System 322: Ask a Designer (Comic Sans)

Today starts 2 weeks of strips that I’m posting in advance. I asked what questions people had on Twitter and this week are the responses.

When Vincent Connare designed Comic Sans for Microsoft in 1994, he had good intentions. He wanted a comic book styled font that could be available to the masses. What he didn’t want is for that font to be used freakin’ everywhere. There’s a right and a wrong time to use every font. Learn it. Use it. And don’t use Papyrus.

The System 321: Ask A Designer (Spaces)

Today starts 2 weeks of strips that I’m posting in advance. I asked what questions people had on Twitter and this week are the responses.

Thanks to Systemic David “Infendo” Cole for sending in this one! I used to do work with Infendo’s podcast, and it is still a great source for all news Nintendo.
